Kirkus Review (excerpts)
A riveting tale of archaeological intrigue.
Converting her nonfiction research into historical suspense, novelist Simani introduces real-life archaeologists, Austen Layard, Jules Oppert, Henry Rawlinson and George Smith, showing how their lives and discoveries were intertwined. Author Cheryl Simani demonstrates a genuine flair for compelling drama in her account of the discovery, in the 1860s, of a cuneiform tablet still considered the "cornerstone" of Near Eastern archaeology. The narrative reveals that fraud may have been committed by the likes of Henry Rawlinson and George Smith, founding fathers of Assyriology in relation to this famous tablet. Simani's provocative account of early archaeology is a clear-eyed look at problems that continue to plague the academic realm to this day with practitioners who put their own rampant egos and personal agendas ahead of the truth.Product details

The Cornerstone of Deception in Hebrew edition by Cheryl Simani Israel Simani Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I never thought I could learn so much from one book! Presented in a very enjoyable fashion. I would recommend this to anyone with an interest in historical fiction as well as those who enjoy a good mystery.
If you have never read an historical novel, start with this gripping tale of archaeology, linguistic decipherment, high society, rivalry among scientists, honest devotion to research and (especially) unscrupulous fabrication of evidence. The idiosyncrasy of the characters, most of whom are historical, emerges from the vivid dialogue.
Suspense is deftly sustained from the first page to the last in a plot that includes passionate love and marital bliss, survival and death-- by illness and by assassination.
The research on which this book is based is over my head, so I leave to the specialists an appreciation of its accuracy. The impression an unbiased reader like me gets, however, is that the author has researched extensively both the scientific issues and the historical period addressed. If so inclined, the reader can learn quite a bit from learned conversations among the characters, and the descriptions create environments that seem true to time and place of the narrative.
I ordered this book, because the archaeololgy of the Ancient Near East interests me and so I thought it would be a good read to accompany my Hebrew text book. It ends up being more about the archaeologists' romantic encounters. Not my cuppa
